Enhancing Multifunctionality in Agricultural Landscapes with Native Woody Vegetation

چکیده
The re-integration of native woody vegetation within agricultural areas has the potential to support multifunctional productive landscapes that enhance livestock welfare and restore habitat for wildlife. As there is minimal research on this issue in Aotearoa New Zealand, study aimed identify species propose spatial configurations site designs increase multifunctionality a case site. three components landscape focused were (1) enhancing foraging opportunities livestock, (2) optimizing shade shelter, (3) establishing bush bird habitat. During first phase, sixty-three suitable identified assigned scores based primary objectives constraints. This produced four optimized plant lists, one each above combined list incorporating those with additional environment soil scores. second phase used design thinking methodology strategically locate these plants an established Nine different planting (three component) proposed then, informed by site-specific constraints, located produce individual designs. Finally, exemplar landscape. results indicate reintegrating contribute toward landscapes, proposing layouts from which further investigation into foraging, increased restoration can follow. advances sustainable land management practices offering valuable insights future design.

Targeting perennial vegetation in agricultural landscapes for enhancing ecosystem services
Over the past century, agricultural landscapes worldwide have increasingly been managed for the primary purpose of producing food, while other diverse ecosystem services potentially available from these landscapes have often been undervalued and diminished. The incorporation of relatively small amounts of perennial vegetation in strategic locations within agricultural landscapes dominated by an...
متن کاملPredicting the overall effect of woody borders on insect assemblages in agricultural landscapes
Predicting the overall effect of woody borders on insect assemblages in agricultural landscapes is difficult because the effects that they have been hypothesized to have are numerous, and often conflicting. Management decisions are further complicated because the aims of insect conservation and agricultural production may often conflict. Results of four studies carried out on insects in alfalfa...
متن کاملCoffee landscapes as refugia for native woody biodiversity as forest loss continues in southwest Ethiopia
Land-use changes threaten biodiversity and ecosystem services. Some of the last remaining forest fragments in Ethiopia, and the world’s only habitats that retain genetically diverse wild Arabica coffee populations, have experienced rapid recent conversion to coffee farms, plantations and agricultural fields. We examined patterns of remnant woody plant diversity in the remaining forests, and ass...
متن کاملNative and exotic woody vegetation communities in domestic gardens in relation to social and environmental factors
Vegetation in private gardens contributes significantly to plant species richness and vegetation volume across urban areas. Drivers of garden diversity and structure are complex, reflecting the diversity of social, cultural, and socioeconomic characteristics of the householders who manage their gardens, as well as their predecessors. Here we investigate the woodiness of gardens, and focus on (1...
متن کاملVegetation Structure of Field Margins and Adjacent Forests in Agricultural Landscapes of the North Carolina Piedmont
Irregularly disturbed forests surrounding crop fields in agricultural landscapes often serve as ecological buffers that separate undesirable agricultural elements such as agrichemicals and weedy species from adjacent ecosystems. However, the nature of this interface between fields and forests remains little studied, particularly within the context of how species composition changes with field d...
